Optics and Photonics Group

The Optics and Photonics research group is one of the leading groups in advanced solid state laser research and precision laser sensing in Australasia.

Our academic staff has over 70 years of combined research experience in the field. Our graduates are employed in excellent and rewarding positions worldwide. We enjoy close research interactions with groups in Australia and internationally in topics ranging from fundamental physics to industrial applications. The broad range of research topics include:

  • Optics, optical design, telescopes
  • Laser physics and laser development
  • The application of lasers to ultra-sensitive metrology and remote sensing
  • Coherent laser radar and lidar studies of the atmosphere
  • Detection of super-cooled liquid water in clouds by optical scattering
  • Hartmann wavefront sensing and interferometry
  • Non-linear optics
  • Optical phase conjugation, holography and diffractive optics
  • Coherence
  • Bio-optics

Each project page contains links to our publications and collaborations, the most significant of which include the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA).

The optics and photonics group and research area at the University of Adelaide was founded in 1990 and has been growing ever since. So far 19 PhD students and numerous honours and masters students have graduated from our group. We are always welcoming new students to our group, and if you are interested in joining, please contact Prof. Jesper Munch, Assoc. Prof. Murray Hamilton, Assoc. Prof. Peter Veitch or Dr David Ottaway by email.
